Do I Need A Permit For A Skip?

What Is A Skip Permit?

A skip permit is a document that gives you permission to temporarily place a skip in a public area. Usually, this public area is on a road outside your home. Skip permits are used to ensure safety procedures are followed and that traffic and parking are not significantly disrupted by badly located skips or multiple skips in one area. Having a skip permit will give you proof that your skip can be in that position for a certain period of time.

Do I Need A Permit For A Skip?

When you hire a skip from us, we will ask you if a permit is required. If you are unsure, our team of experts will ask you a few questions to work out if you need a permit for a skip, based on where you are planning to keep it.

Is Your Skip On Private Land Or A Private Road?

If you plan to store your skip on private land such as a driveway, garden or field, then you don’t usually need a permit. There are some other permissions you might want to consider, such as checking with neighbours, landlords and anyone else who might regularly access the land.

Out of politeness, it’s always best to keep your neighbours informed of when your skip will be delivered and where it will be kept, just to help avoid any confusion or inconvenience.

Is Your Skip On The Road?

When placing a skip on a road or in any public area you will need to have the appropriate skip licence or skip permit. It’s worth noting that you can’t put a skip on a public pavement, and there are some other restrictions in city centres. Your skip permit will be specific to the size of the skip you are hiring, the location you will be storing it, and how long it will be there.

Don’t worry though, when you hire a skip from us, we’ll arrange all the required permits for you as part of our service.

How Do I Get A Skip Permit?

When you book your skip hire with us, we’ll approach the relevant local authority to arrange a permit on your behalf. All you have to do is tell us your desired location for the skip, and we’ll let you know the length of time your local council will provide a permit for. If there are any other restrictions on location or time frames we’ll make you aware of these too.

How Much Is A Skip Permit?

The cost of a skip permit and the length of time a permit lasts will vary depending on your local authority. As a result, prices of permits vary significantly across the county. When you get a quote from us, we will factor in the cost of your permit, all you need to do is let us know the desired location for your skip.

We always recommend planning ahead to make sure you purchase a permit for the right amount of time to cover your entire hire period and allow for any delays or changes to your timings. Extensions to skip permits can be made, but it’s usually cheaper to buy the correct length of permit from the outset.

Skip permits often take at least four working days for a local authority to process, so allow plenty of time before your skip arrives as you will need to have the permit in place from delivery to collection. Our friendly team will help take some of the hassle out of this process, by arranging a skip permit for you as part of your hire.

How To Check If A Skip Has A Permit

To check if a skip has a permit, you can either contact the hire company using the contact details on the skip or check with your local authority. This is one of the reasons that the name and telephone number of the skip hire company must be displayed on a skip when it is placed on a road.

What Happens If A Skip On The Road Doesn’t Have A Permit?

Any skip that is placed on a road or on an area of public land without a skip permit can be removed without notice, and a fine of up to £1,000 may be issued. A skip also needs to be properly illuminated at night and have traffic cones around it to protect passing pedestrians and motorists.
