So, you’ve just got the keys to your new build. Everything is brand-new, from the fixtures to the fittings and, unlike older properties, you have a blank canvas to design how you choose. If you want to infuse some personal style into your ultramodern new build property but aren’t sure, here are a few tips to help make it feel more like a home.
Add Colour To Your Walls
New builds are generally designed with a neutral colour scheme, either white or grey. If this seems a tad too clinical for your liking, consider adding some colour to your property. You don’t need to paint the whole room though; you could decide to do a feature wall in a deep blue or mustard yellow to uplift the space.
Use this colour to complement the rest of your home’s decor. For instance, you could include cushions, throws, and rugs that match the colour of your walls.
Install Some Period Features
One thing that new builds lack is period features. Think ceiling roses, tiled flooring, and ornate fireplaces. However, you don’t need to purchase a period home in order to have these features when you can add them yourself.
Features such as wall panelling and moulded coving are among the most popular choices for new builds for giving them more character – and they’re incredibly easy to install.
While you could install a gas fireplace in a new build, it’s much more cost-effective and environmentally friendly to opt for a faux fireplace instead. You still get that cosy wooden cabin feeling without it setting you back.
Decorate The Front Of The House
New build properties tend to all look the same from the outside. Considering the number of properties in one development, it makes sense to have yours stand out. You don’t need to go overboard here, just some simple, personal touches will do.
Think about switching up your house number or giving your front door a lick of paint. You may also choose to include some outdoor plants on either side of your door or some tasteful garden ornaments.
Change The Lighting
The lighting of a home can significantly affect the overall atmosphere. While you may like the lighting you already have in your new build, it doesn’t hurt to add to this using fairly lamps, stand-up lamps, and cabinet lighting. These can complement or replace the standard overhead lighting.
Another great idea is to swap your bulbs with smart light bulbs. This will allow you to change the colour of your lighting and control the brightness, creating a much warmer and inviting environment.
